His first intro to fantasy fiction came with Rudyard Kipling and the Jungle Book. He spent his early life reading copiously in all genres and subjects, but came to understand that sci-fi is a master genre, in which all lesser genres can be subsumed. Any genre from romance to political allegory to epic adventure can be set on another planet, in another time or another reality, and acquire extra dimensions of meaning and power.
