Self Publish a Book author Thomas F. McLoughlin, A bachelor of science degree was earned while attending Morehead State University at Morehead, Kentucky. In December of 1979, I completed my master thesis in geology at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. Then in June 1980, I joined the US Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). I stayed with this agency as a geologist and coal-mine inspector for twenty-eight years, collecting plant fossils in the coal mines and outcrops (road cuts) in southwestern Virginia. For approximately twenty-six years, I taught introduction to geology courses at colleges in Cumberland, Kentucky, and Wise, Virginia. I started out in geology as a rock hound, collecting rocks, minerals, and fossils. By the end of high school, I decided to become a geologist and attended college. Actually, my parents insisted that I leave home because it was overtaken by my rock samples. During high school and college, I practiced lapidary work, making jewelry from minerals and rocks.

This book is a picture guide to fossil plants and a few fossil marine organisms found in close association with the coal measures in southwestern Virginia. The fossils are sorted by groups and located as to coal seam horizon and geographic location. Short descriptions of each group of plant types are provided. This publication has been designed with the armature (rock hound) as well as a virtual guide for the more advanced collectors. There are 57 plates with more than 280 illustrations, most of which are in color.

Tones I believe that a drawing or painting can only come near its’ best if correct tonal values (darks and lights) are used and that using different tones is the one most important aspect of making a picture. If the tonal values are wrong then forget it !! It is no good trying to compensate for the poor use of tones by going wild on colour. It won’t solve the problem. In fact the converse can make a very pleasing picture. As long as the tonal values are correct you can sometimes, with success use bright outlandish colours. Among the greatest artists that ever lived was Caravaggio who didn’t bother too much about colour but my word, his use of light and dark was breathtaking. Rembrandt limited his pallet to mostly the autumn colours and only a few of them. All of his pictures came to life by his use of tones. Indeed, without different tones we would all see very little. Simplifying the number of tones to Dark, Light and Mid-tone, we can make observations which may help your pictures along. One tone should predominate; and none should cover a similar surface area of the picture as either of the other two.

Why was that vile disease allowed to desecrate her? That seems so lame. If God wanted her in His Heaven, why didn’t just walk with her without the pain? I know the printed answer that the Bible has in its pages. Some even say that it is for our sins that we collect our wages. I know that for this reason we are called the faithful, that’s good for me Because Jesus painfully died on the cross to show the way we must be. I will never understand why the love of my life died in such a way. But I do understand that I am not God, no not even for one day. His thoughts are higher than my thoughts; His ways are higher than mine So I really don’t have the ability to understand even if he took the time. My job is to simply carry on, to take one day and then another To care for my family, my new wife, my sister, brother and mother. ‘Til at last it is my turn at the gate, I will pray really fervent, That when I meet Jesus he will say “Well done, My good and faithful servant.”

Katarzyna Kuzicka and Jan Pietr Wjotla (Viola), arrived in the United States in 1911. They settled in Clarendon, Pennsylvania before getting married and moving to a small farm thirty five miles away in the township of Spring Creek. They raised a family of seven children, four girls and three boys.

The Clough Farm was built down the road from the Wjotla's in 1915. It was a farm before its time. It featured electricity twenty years before other homes in the surrounding communities. Prized cattle were brought in from Scotland. Many of the country's entrepreneurs, the Rockefellers, Morgans and Vanderbilts stayed at the farm and fished the Brokenstraw Creek, one of the finest fly fishing spots in the eastern United States.

Brokenstraw Rain is an interesting story bringing the Wjotla family and the Clough Farm together in a tale of kidnapping, gin running, the Cold War and murder. It spans the lifetime of a pair of Polish immigrants who came to America to seek a better life.
